November’s Meeting

Our next meeting will be held at Petco on Monroe Street. With winter quickly approaching, this causes us to be a little more creative with creating enrichment for our birds. Our topic will be “Enrichment, Thinking Outside the Box”. Come and join us on Monday, November 14th at 6:15pm. We will talk about different forms of enrichment and how they work in modifying behavior issues. We’ll walk the isles of Petco sharing examples of how other forms of enrichment can be safely used with our birds.

Our last meeting we trained a few quakers that are currently at Petco. Hopefully some of the training techniques shared have shown to be useful in your home.

At our last meeting we also announced that Mary Hitchcock has taken the position as our events coordinator. She will be scheduling upcoming topics, meetings, and organizing our field excursions for 2012. Please touch base with her if you have ideas.

Our December meeting will be the last one of the year. We are planning to do the same thing this year as we did last year. Our meeting will be replaced by a Christmas/Holiday dinner. Mary has sent out an e-mail in regards to voting on where we would like to meet this year. If you haven’t responded to Mary’s e-mail yet about where you would like to meet for dinner, please do so. We will be counting up the votes within the next week.

Deanna and Nate getting the opportunity to interact with Tanya's palm cockatoo.

What a fantastic meeting this was. It was nice to venture outside of our normal monthly meetings. There was interest in visiting the Ann Arbor Companion Bird Club so we asked them. They discussed it and then invited us to come up and attend their April meeting. So on a warm 80 degree spring day we loaded a few cars full of members of the Parrot Society of NW Ohio and headed to Ann Arbor.

It was neat to see how and where they have their monthly meetings. Their meetings are located on the property of  Animal Kingdom Veterinary Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. The facility houses many animals and is well worth the trip to visit.

Our meeting started with discussion and snacks. The two groups mingled and got to know each other. Expanding contacts in the avian community is always

Melanie's amazon, Kuhara enjoying the new found foraging foot toy.

great. You never know when you may need to contact someone. After the mingling, Lara Joseph was asked to give a presentation on foraging toys, their importance, and samples in making some. Easy “do-it-yourself” foraging toys were handed out among members of both groups and a great time was had not only making them, but having the birds there trying them. The proof is in the pudding. Just look at Kuhara eagerly tearing into her’s here. The importance of foraging, the effects on behavior in the wild and in captivity were discussed.

Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. Thank you AACBC for giving us the opportunity to visit.

Our trip to the Ann Arbor Companion Bird club is today. We asked and they also invited us up to attend a meeting. We are excited about going and we will be discussing foraging and foraging toys.

This trip to their meeting is taking place of April’s meeting for the Parrot Society of NW Ohio.

Our next adventure is to get together and for the movie Rio, which opens next weekend, April 15th. We may need some volunteers for the opening next weekend. We’ll post more this week. In the last meeting we discussed getting together for this movie and lunch or dinner. The opening weekend didn’t seem to work out for a few so we discussed getting together the following weekend of the 22nd – 24th. If you would like to go, send us an e-mail.

Next week, February 14th will be our 1 year anniversary for the Parrot Society of NW Ohio! We can’t believe it has been a year already. Our monthly meetings are filled with faithful members, a few members that show up when they can, and a couple of newbies sprinkled in between.

Our monthly meetings are educational and focus on topics to help keep the homes of parrots healthy, enriched, and ever learning together with parrots and people. Our mission is to keep the bird in the home, aiding the next home with the tools for success,  and providing the education to keep that environment stimulating and happy for all. Our mission statement is: The Parrot Society of NW Ohio is dedicated to providing a resource for the most recent information and education in parrot behavior and welfare. We strive to create and maintain a happy and healthy environment for the parrot, and all of those involved with its care and livelihood, through positive reinforcement interactions. We support the advancement of aviculture through educational outreach in companion parrot welfare, avian research, and conservation.

Thank you to all involved over the past year for making and continuing to make the Parrot Society of NW Ohio what it is today. Our next meeting is Monday, February 14th, beginning at 6:15 at the Sanger Branch Library on Central Avenue. Several people are brining snacks and pop. Light refreshments are allowed at the library. If you would like to bring something, please feel free to but also let us know so we can help prevent too much food from being brought.

If you would like to stop in and help us celebrate, please feel free to do so. During the first hour we will be mingling, talking, and eating. The second hour we will proceed to discuss the topic we had intended on discussing last month. The topic will be “Observing, understanding, and working with sexual behaviors of our companion parrots.”
